What is a resume objective?

Your objective tells a prospective employer the type of work you are currently pursuing.

A resume objective is a concise statement at the beginning of your resume that tells the employer exactly how you will be of value to their organization. Given that employers view each resume at fast speed before deciding whether to read on or not, the objective takes a big opportunity to grab their attention in their precious time.

What to include in resume Objective

l  People with very extensive work experience can use an objective statement to clearly specify which position they are interested in and why.

l  Those who've been out of the workforce for a while due to military duty or family matters can explain how the experiences they've earned will translate into productive skills on the job.

l  Entry level job applicants can use the resume objective to elaborate on the coursework they've completed and on the work ethic they possess, since they give a focus to a resume that doesn't yet include much work experience.

l  People changing careers use resume objectives to show the employer what they can add to the organization, despite lack of directly relevant experience.

What not to include in Resume Objective

l  Avoid objectives like, "position which utilizes my skills and abilities" without specifying your skills and abilities.

l  If you can't be specific about the job you're applying for for any reason, don't use an objective.

l  Never include a resume objective when there are several positions for which you are qualified and would like to be considered for all of them.

l  Don't use an objective when your distributing your resume at a career fair.
